Moodboard
A collection of reference images, colors, textures, and stylistic examples assembled to communicate and align on a visual direction before a product photography shoot begins.
What is Moodboard?
Moodboards serve a critical pre-production function in product photography: they align all stakeholders (photographer, client, art director, stylist) on the visual direction before any physical setup begins. An effective moodboard contains: 5-15 reference images showing desired lighting quality and direction, background textures and surface materials, prop style and quantity, color palette, and the overall mood (editorial, clean commercial, artisan, luxury, lifestyle). Digital moodboard tools (Pinterest boards, Milanote, Canva) enable remote collaboration. When working with AI product photography tools, moodboards translate directly into prompt specifications — describing the reference images in prompt language.
E-Commerce Relevance
Creating a brand moodboard before any product photography (physical or AI) establishes the visual consistency standards that make a brand recognizable across all channels — preventing the inconsistent photography aesthetic that undermines brand trust.
