Outpainting
An AI technique that extends an image beyond its original boundaries — generating new content that seamlessly continues the photograph outside the original frame.
What is Outpainting?
Outpainting (also called 'uncropping' or 'canvas extension') uses AI to predict and generate what would logically exist outside an existing image's frame. For product photography applications: expand a vertically-composed product image horizontally to fit a wide banner format, add more background space around a tightly cropped product for text overlay room, extend a lifestyle scene to a wider aspect ratio for a landing page hero, or convert a square Amazon image to a 16:9 landscape for social media covers. Outpainting is distinct from upscaling — it generates genuinely new content rather than enlarging existing pixels.
E-Commerce Relevance
Outpainting enables flexible repurposing of product photography across different aspect ratio requirements — a square e-commerce image can be extended to a 16:9 banner, a portrait mobile image can be widened for desktop — without reshooting or awkward cropping.
