Key Light
The primary, dominant light source in a photography lighting setup that establishes the overall exposure and creates the main illumination on the subject.
What is Key Light?
In product photography, the key light is typically a softbox or large LED panel positioned at 45° to the side and slightly above the product. The key light establishes the lighting ratio (how much brighter it is than the fill) that determines the mood: equal key and fill creates flat, airy e-commerce lighting; 3:1 or higher ratio creates dramatic, luxury product lighting.
E-Commerce Relevance
Understanding key light positioning is fundamental to replicating the professional studio look that marketplace-leading product images use.
