Rim Light
A light positioned behind and to the side of the product that creates a highlight 'rim' or outline around the product's edges, separating it from the background.
What is Rim Light?
Rim lighting is used in product photography to add depth, separation, and a premium look. It's particularly effective for dark products on dark backgrounds, where it defines the product's silhouette. Rim lights are also called 'hair lights' (in portrait photography) or 'separation lights' — they prevent the product from appearing flat against a similarly-toned background.
E-Commerce Relevance
Rim lighting is a key technique for photographing dark or all-black products — it adds the definition that prevents them from looking flat or low-quality.
